Detailed Evaluation

Basic Information of Tuft & Needle mattress

To distinguish itself from other similar brands and ensure better sleep quality for users, a new model - Mint, has been developed. This newly-introduced product has made improvements in several aspects, which will be covered in this review article.

Size & Price

Size Dimension Weight Price
Twin 39” x 75 50lbs $325-650
Twin XL 39" x 80" 52lbs $375-695
Full 54” x 75” 63-66lbs $475-795
Queen 60” x 80” 72-80lbs $575-895
King 76” x 80” 94-100lbs $700-1,050
Cal King 72” x 84” 94l-100bs $700-1,050

Construction & Composition

The Tuft & Needle mattress has two layers in all, measuring up 10 inches. The comfort layer uses three inches of the brand’s proprietary T&N Adaptive® foam, below which, there is a seven-inch base made of high-density polyfoam. Therefore, the mattress provides quick pressure response and relief for sleepers. And a heat wicking graphite is offered to ensure cooling night’s sleep.

The Mint has made some changes and is constructed with three foam layers, adding 2 inches to the original model, making it 12 inches. The most notable difference is that it added an adaptive transition layer in between to better connect the soft top and supportive base. Besides, sleepers who buy the Mint can enjoy cooler sleep because the model added 30% more graphite and gel beads to generate extra cooling effect.

Lifespan/Durability/Longevity

It is estimated that both the Tuft & Needle and Mint mattresses can be used for 6 years on average, on par with similar models. In accordance with some owners, the top layer tends to wear a little within months. And it seems common that the mattress suffers from minimal sagging and deterioration after using for a period.

Motion Isolation

All foam mattresses are expected to have better motion isolation, and the Tuft & Needle and the Mint are no exception. Light sleepers who are woken up easily by your partner can finally enjoy a sound sleep. Although it cannot eliminate all the disturbance, still the mattress can absorb and reduce motion transfer to a significant extent.

Edge Support

Like most foam mattress brands, the Tuft & Needle has little edge support for sitting or sleeping, especially for large-sized people. But the new model Mint performs better in this aspect because it provides an improved, firmer base layer that adds edge support. So if you are large or prefer to sit at the edge of your bed, it would be better for you to choose Mint.

Firm

Generally speaking, the Tuft & Needle mattress has medium level firmness, suitable for most sleepers, and the base layer can provide good support. The Mint appears to be a little softer than the original model. It’s impossible to suit everyone after all, but you have 100 nights to try and feel if it is the perfect mattress.

Off-gassing & Noise

It would be common for mattresses to emit particles and give out odor when they are unpackaged. According to owners, there isn’t any significant unpleasant initial odor, and it dissipates rather quickly if any. As foam-based mattresses, both the Tuft & Needle and Mint models have no springs, coils or other metal components, making it virtually silent when sleepers lie down or change positions.

Heat Retention

Compared to its main competitors, the Tuft & Needle mattress performs better, and few owners claim that they wake up feeling very hot. But if you have very high expectations for a cool night sleep, you can always choose the Mint mattress because the new model added 30% more graphite and gel beads to generate extra cooling effect.

Easy to Move and Maintain

Given the fact that both models are significantly lighter than other foam mattresses, it is easy to move, lift and handle despite no handles or grips attached. But its lightness will cause movement on the base, so you need to adjust it occasionally. And it would be better to rotate the mattress from head to foot 2 or 3 times a year to prevent wear and lengthen its durability.

Topper Usage & Pressure Relief

For those who weigh less than 130 pounds, the mattress may seem a little firm, and they can use a topper to lessen the firmness. Besides, both models use the brand’s adaptive foam that can conform effectively to your body and better relieve the pressure and pain you suffer after a long-time work.

Person Size & Sleep Position

How to choose the mattress that suits you the most? Here we present two tables for you to describe the suitability of both the Tuft & Needle and the Mint for sleepers in different positions and of various sizes.

Average-Sized People(130-230lbs) Large People(230+ Lbs) Small People(Under 130 Lbs)
Back Sleep Friendly Very Good Good Good
Side Sleep Friendly Very Good Good Fair
Stomach Sleep Friendly Very Good Good Fair

For those who weigh between 130-230 lbs, the Tuft & Needle mattress suits very well no matter how they prefer to sleep. But for side and stomach sleepers who are under 130 lbs, the Tuft & Needle can be too firm.

Average-Sized People(130-230lbs) Large People(230+ Lbs) Small People(Under 130 Lbs)
